in the days before the long-awaited start of a new fall season.

ABC's ``Monday Night Football'' matchup between San Francisco and Washington was the week's fourth-most-watched show. ``The Miss America Pageant'' on Saturday and a Thursday night airing of the movie ``Lethal Weapon 3'' had strong showings for the network on evenings when it traditionally does poorly.

For the week, ABC had an 8.1 rating and 14 share. CBS (Cell Broadcast Service) See cell broadcast.  was second with a 7.9 rating and 14 share and NBC NBC

tumbled to third with a 7.5 rating and 13 share. Fox had a 6.2 rating and 11 share.

Among the emerging networks, the WB had a 2.5 rating and 4 share, and UPN UPN User Principal Name (Microsoft Windows 2000)

had a 1.9 rating and 3 share. Pax TV, the new seventh network that started broadcasting Aug. 31, was measured for the first time by Nielsen and had an 0.5 rating and 1 share.

The new television season officially started Sunday, although some shows premiered early. CBS' Sunday night lineup had a strong season debut, as its three programs led the week's ratings. The Walter Matthau movie ``The Marriage Fool'' was the week's most-watched prime-time program.

Fox's ``Ally McBeal'' opened the season in the top 10, beating ``Monday Night Football'' among viewers ages 18-49 for the first time ever.

Among the week's losers: Conan O'Brien's fifth-anniversary special and ABC's fast-fading summer series, ``Maximum Bob.''

For the second week in a row, NBC's ``Nightly News'' and ABC's ``World News Tonight'' finished in a dead heat in the evening news competition. They both had 7.6 ratings and 17 shares, followed by the ``CBS Evening News'' at a 6.9 rating and 15 share.

A rating point represents 994,000 households, or 1 percent of the nation's estimated 99.4 million TV homes. Share is the percentage of in-use televisions tuned to a given show.
