The comedy ``Clueless'' already has premiered, and on Sept. 30, a weekly version of last year's school drama ``Dangerous Minds'' will be unveiled. ``Designing Women'' and ``Love & War'' alumna Annie Potts takes over where Michelle Pfeiffer left off. The first episode revisits much of the material in the film - including Coolio's award-winning theme song ``Gangsta's Paradise'' - as Potts plays Louanne Johnson, the real-life ex-Marine who's had a profound effect on the troubled inner-city students she's taught in her unique, reward-oriented way.

``What a hard subject to explore in two hours,'' said series co-executive producer Ronald Bass

``We've got 22 hours this season, if we do it right, to show you an awful lot more of this person. And in Annie, we have someone who's going to give a fully textured and more-complete portrait than any film could ever have shown you.''

Potts said that in assuming the role of Louanne, she's reflected on teachers who made definite impacts on her: ``I've had several in my life who influenced me, and I've drawn from all of them to piece together things in my heart that I feel are good things for a teacher to have, and that I think Louanne has. How wonderful for somebody to have that kind of commitment, who wants not only to educate (students) but is willing to raise them up if necessary, to love them and to shelter them. I think she is compelled by enormous affection for them to do whatever she needs to do.''

He feels that even though the film is more than a year old, it remains fresh enough to justify the series debuting now.

``I think that especially the music keeps reminding you over and over again of the movie,'' he said. ``The song (`Gangsta's Paradise') was No. 1 around the world, and it's become kind of an anthem for young people. I think that will carry the soul of the picture right through the series.''

Bass adds, ``By the time we had the idea this was something we wanted to move forward with, this was really the fastest it could go. I don't think this is about the `heat' from the movie, because a show has to carry its own.

``People are going to watch the first (episode because of the film's popularity), but only if we're doing our job right are they going to watch a second time. I think the shows that have come out of movies and aren't successful are trying to stretch a premise that's really suited to a two-hour format into something longer.''

When the original ``Dangerous Minds'' was filmed, Andy Garcia had a co-starring role as Louanne's love interest; ultimately, though, that entire subplot sub·plot

He frequently co-writes episodes with his wife, Diane Frolov.  (formerly of ``Northern Exposure''): ``That's an issue we really want to get into. We want this to be a broad show, so while we want to explore these kids' lives separate from Louanne, we also want to explore her personal life away from the kids. She will have romances.''

The producers claim that's something the real-life Louanne Johnson approves of. ``She loved the pilot,'' Schneider said. ``She said, `I give you guys an A-plus. Extra credit, even.' ''

Bruckheimer reveals that Johnson lives in New Mexico New Mexico, state in the SW United States.
