network announced Friday it has reached a tentative, four-year deal with negotiators for the 2,400 unionized technicians it locked out for 11 weeks last fall and winter.

The pact, which must be ratified by employees, ends more than two years of working without a contract for camera operators, producers and other behind-the-scenes workers represented by the National Association of Broadcast Employees and Technicians. About 600 of the affected employees work in the Los Angeles Los Angeles (lôs ăn`jələs, lŏs, ăn`jəlēz'), city (1990 pop. 3,485,398), seat of Los Angeles co., S Calif.; inc. 1850.  area.

``We're recommending ratification even though the tentative contract falls short of our objectives, because we believe it's the best agreement that can be achieved at this time,'' said NABET NABET National Association of Broadcast Employees and Technicians  negotiator John Krieger. Results of the vote are expected to be released July 16.

The pact provides for a 3.5 percent salary increase, retroactive to June 26, 3 percent increases for each of the next two years and a 3.5 percent increase in the final year through March 31, 2003. The union said the agreement also improves contract provisions covering vacation, discharges and the hiring of daily workers.

Five units turned down a network proposal in December, but the union returned to work in January after agreeing to give advance warning of future strikes in exchange for obtaining binding arbitration on dismissals of several members.
