ABBOTT SETTLES FLORIDA INFANT FORMULA LITIGATION

ABBOTT PARK, Ill., May 21 /PRNewswire/ -- Abbott Laboratories (NYSE: ABT) announced today that it has settled with all plaintiffs in the infant formula antitrust cases consolidated in federal court in Tallahassee, Fla.
The settlements require no change in the company's marketing and business practices and contain no admission of guilt or wrongdoing.
"We are pleased to conclude this matter," said Duane L. Burnham, chairman and chief executive officer. "We stress that Abbott has, and continues to compete responsibly, aggressively and completely within the law," he said. "A settlement allows us to put these cases behind us without the distraction of a lengthy jury trial on a complex antitrust issue."
Financial terms of the settlements were not disclosed. These settlements will not have an impact on reported net earnings.
The company is still a party to other infant formula antitrust proceedings, including an administrative action and a federal court action brought by the Federal Trade Commission, seven cases in California state Court, one case in Texas state court, one case in Alabama state court and five state investigations. While it is not feasible to predict the outcome of such pending claims, proceedings, and investigations with certainty, management is of the opinion, with which its General Counsel concurs, that their ultimate disposition should not have a material adverse effect on the company's financial position.
Abbott Laboratories is a worldwide manufacturer of health care products employing 48,000 people. In 1992, the company's sales and net earnings were $7.9 billion and $1.2 billion, respectively, with earnings per share of $1.47.
