ABB TO CONSOLIDATE NUCLEAR FUEL MANUFACTURING OPERATIONS
ABB TO CONSOLIDATE NUCLEAR FUEL MANUFACTURING OPERATIONS STAMFORD, Conn., Nov. 19 /PRNewswire/ -- Asea Brown Boveri Inc.
(ABB) today said a unit will consolidate its nuclear fuel manufacturing activities at its facility in Hematite, Mo., near St. Louis.
The consolidation at the Hematite plant, operated by ABB Combustion Engineering Nuclear Fuel, will take approximately two years to complete and calls for a building to be constructed to house a new, automated fuel rod assembly line. The Hematite facility converts enriched uranium hexaflouride to uranium dioxide powder that is formed into ceramic pellets. Currently, those pellets are being shipped to Windsor, Conn., where they are loaded into fuel rods and then shipped to customers for use in nuclear power plants. Under the new arrangement, finished fuel assemblies will be shipped to the customer directly from Hematite. The Windsor facility will continue as the business center of ABB nuclear fuel operations in the United States, manufacturing fuel assembly components, such as spacer grids and control rods. ABB Combustion Engineering Nuclear Fuel is a unit of Asea Brown Boveri Inc., which provides products and services for the power, process, industrial automation, environmental control, mass transit and other markets. The company and its subsidiaries have sales of approximately $6 billion and some 30,000 employees in the United States. -0- 11/19/91 /CONTACT: Karen Armour of Asea Brown Boveri, 203-328-2217, or at home, 203-655/9461/ CO: Asea Brown Boveri Inc.
