ABB ACQUIRES ESAB ARC WELDING ROBOTICS OPERATIONS

ZURICH and STAMFORD, Conn., Dec. 18 /PRNewswire/ -- ABB Robotics AB, headquartered in Sweden, announced today it has reached an agreement with the Swedish welding company ESAB to acquire its robotic arc welding business that employs some 300 people and has an annual turnover of about $80 million. The agreement, which depends on regulatory agency approval, includes combining the resources of both companies to give ABB Robotics AB a leading position in this field in Europe and North America.
ABB Robotics AB and ESAB have worked closely together for almost 20 years in developing the robotics arc welding market. ESAB has delivered more than 5,000 robotic welding systems that incorporate the ABB robot, mainly in Europe and North America. To date, ABB Robotics AB and ESAB have operated separate organizations for the production, research and development, sales and service in the arc welding market. ABB Robotics AB expects its turnover after the acquisition will increase by about 30 percent, to some $450 million.
ABB estimates that robotic arc welding represents some 40 percent of the growing worldwide market. The primary customer groups for robotic arc welding systems are the automotive industry, its sub-suppliers, and the sheet metal industry. Both companies see a substantial business opportunity for increased volume by combining the two operations. The merged operations will provide improved market coverage and penetration.
ESAB robotics activities, which are located in Germany and Sweden, and in other European countries, as well as in Fort Collins, Colo., U.S.A., will be merged with ABB Robotics' existing local Robot Automation Centers. ABB Robotics, of the United States, has headquarters in New Berlin, Wisc. in addition to operations in Plymouth and Rochester Hills, Mich.
