ABAXIS reports third fiscal quarter financial results.

SUNNYVALE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Jan. 23, 1997--ABAXIS Inc. (Nasdaq NM:ABAX ABAX Abaxial ), Thursday reported operating results for its third fiscal quarter and nine-month period ended Dec. 31, 1996.

For the third fiscal quarter, net revenues increased 112 percent to $1,891,000, from net revenues of $892,000 in the same period last year. Net loss for the quarter amounted to $1,260,000, or 12 cents per share Cents per share

(based on 10.4 million weighted average shares outstanding) compared with a net loss of $1,556,000, or 16 cents per share, in the same period last year (based on 9.8 million weighted average shares outstanding).

For the nine-month period ended Dec. 31, 1996, ABAXIS posted net revenues of $4,915,000, representing a 155 percent increase over net revenues of $1,931,000 for the comparable period last year. Net loss for the nine months was $4,994,000, or 50 cents per share (based on 10 million weighted average shares outstanding) compared with $4,536,000, or 49 cents per share, a year ago (based on 9.3 million weighted average shares outstanding).

Through the first three quarters of this fiscal year, the company has registered an average 21 percent improvement quarter over quarter in net losses, due largely to a 56 percent increase in net revenue from the first to the third quarter, as well as improved operating efficiency which resulted in higher gross margins and lower operating expenses Operating expenses

This quarter's revenue increase reflects higher sales of the company's VetScan blood testing products in the U.S. veterinary market, as well as continued growth overseas for VetScan and Piccolo piccolo, small transverse flute pitched an octave higher than the standard flute. By product, VetScan and Piccolo analyzers accounted for 67 percent of net revenue, reagent reagent /re·a·gent/ (re-a´jent) a substance used to produce a chemical reaction so as to detect, measure, produce, etc., other substances.

As expected, operating expenses for the three- and nine-month periods increased over the corresponding prior year periods as the company continued its investment in sales and marketing infrastructure for ongoing product roll-out.

During the quarter, ABAXIS signed a definitive agreement with Freiheit Medizintechnik AG who will be the company's exclusive distributor in Germany. In addition, the company has submitted a solicitation solicitation
