ABA PRESIDENT RESPONDS TO DECISION ON DEPORTATION OF HAITIAN REFUGEES
DALLAS, Feb. 1 /PRNewswire/ -- Talbot D'Alemberte, president of the American Bar Association, today released the following statement regarding the 11th Circuit Court decision allowing deportation of Haitian refugees:
"Last night, the U.S. Supreme Court cleared the way for the government to immediately deport more than 9,000 Haitian refugees at Guantanamo Bay and on U.S. Coast Guard vessels. It is a tragedy that refugees fleeing widespread terror and human rights abuses by an illegal regime will be returned to Haiti to suffer possibly a more violent fate.
"Last year, the President signed legislation authorizing the Attorney General to give temporary safe haven to people from countries experiencing civil war and other extraordinary conditions. This protection should be granted immediately and, in any event, the Administration should not deport the Haitians and should allow them a meaningful opportunity to demonstrate their eligibility for asylum."
