AARP Investment Program Survey Reveals Lack of Communication About Inheritance.

Business Editors

BOSTON--(BUSINESS WIRE)--March 27, 2002

The AARP AARP, a nonprofit, nonpartisan national organization dedicated to "enriching the experience of aging"; membership is open to people age 50 or older. Founded in 1958 by Ethel Percy Andrus as American Association of Retired Persons, AARP now has over 30 million  Investment Program from Scudder, MANAGED BY Zurich Scudder Investments, has released the findings of an omnibus omnibus: see bus.  survey that examines public attitudes, experiences and behavior associated with inheritances and legacy planning. This proprietary research consisted of 1,000 interviews conducted with adult Americans.

Overall, the survey results suggest that almost three-quarters (72%) of adult Americans believe it is important to leave an inheritance to their children and heirs; however, less than 40% of those surveyed have had any discussions with their heirs about legacy plans. The survey results further revealed that adult Americans communicate most often with their heirs about beneficiary designation (63%), but communicate infrequently in·fre·quent

and other professionals who have assisted them in planning their Legacy (39%).

"Most individuals spend their entire lifetime saving, investing and planning for their retirement goals. Despite the amount of time and energy that goes into this preparation, a crucial step is often missed," said Jim Thompson, Director of Shareholder Education, AARP Investment Program. "Sharing relevant information with your spouse and heirs, such as the location of an inventory of assets and investment accounts, is fundamental to ensuring your legacy plans are carried out."

Other key findings of the Legacy Survey include:
-- helping investors organize important financial documents, making it easier
to share investment information and goals with family members.

-- assigning a personal Legacy Service representative to guide family members
through the process of transferring ownership of AARP Investment Program Fund
assets.

The AARP has some of the poorest program on the market, relying on the false appearance that they are some kind of charity or public service organization. They aren't. They are a privately owned insurance agent and little else. They are a 501(C)(4) organization, meaning they are non-profit and all that means is that the owners keep the profits themselves and don't pay them out to anyone. Don't be fooled, just look closely at their programs and compare them with other insurance company offerings. Remember, they are AGENTS and they get a commission from selling you insurance. If you go straight to the company you don't have to pay that commission.
