AARP Investment Program Launches Online Courses.

Business Editors

BOSTON--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 24, 2001

The AARP AARP, a nonprofit, nonpartisan national organization dedicated to "enriching the experience of aging"; membership is open to people age 50 or older. Founded in 1958 by Ethel Percy Andrus as American Association of Retired Persons, AARP now has over 30 million  Investment Program from Scudder has launched three interactive online courses, available to the public at aarp.scudder.com, focusing on the unique financial needs of AARP members.

The AARP Investment Program, managed by Zurich Scudder Investments and approved by AARP, is comprised of mutual funds and educational resources designed specifically for investors aged 50 and over. The new courses provide an instructional, interactive learning experience for those who want to build their investing and planning skills and evaluate their current financial situation. They specifically address: Planning Your Retirement, Living in Retirement, and Planning Your Legacy.

The online courses complement the AARP Investment Program's comprehensive Financial Library, a series of 100 educational guides designed to provide insight on how to financially prepare for unexpected life events such as loss of a job, late life marriage, and birth of a grandchild. Each easy to use course, which can be taken as a whole or in small self-contained parts, can take a varied amount of time to complete depending on how deeply the user chooses to engage him or herself in the planning tools. The courses were designed to address different phases of life after 50; for those still accumulating assets for retirement; for those already in retirement and seeking ways to ensure they don't outlive out·live

"People who take the time to educate themselves are likely to be better investors." said Jim Thompson, Director of Shareholder Education for the AARP Investment Program. Scudder partnered with Omega Performance, a worldwide instructional design Instructional design is the practice of arranging media (communication technology) and content to help learners and teachers transfer knowledge most effectively. The process consists broadly of determining the current state of learner understanding, defining the end goal of  firm, to create the courses. The courses follow Omega's Multimedia Encyclopedia Learning Structure, which offers a step-by-step multidimensional learning experience for novice and expert web users. Designed with an adult user in mind, each course incorporates various technological tools and learning techniques designed to engage the user and personalize the information to that investor's unique needs and financial situation.

These tools include mini-calculators which give quick answers to questions such as: "How will inflation impact my nest egg Nest Egg

In addition, the course makes recommendations on related Financial Library guides, which can be downloaded from the aarp.scudder.com website, as well as printable worksheets for topics such as estimating potential retirement income and expenses.

"The advantage of these online courses is the flexibility they allow the user," said Juan Gutierrez, President and CEO (1) (Chief Executive Officer) The highest individual in command of an organization.
