AARP Health Care Options Expands 24-Hour AARP Nurse HealthLine To Medicare Supplement Planholders.

FT. WASHINGTON, Pa., Feb. 1 /PRNewswire/ -- AARP Health Care Options, the health insurance and services program for AARP members, is introducing AARP Nurse HealthLine, a new service available exclusively to all members enrolled in an AARP Medicare Supplement plan, underwritten by United HealthCare Insurance Company. Previously only available to members who specifically have an AARP Medicare Select plan, the service is now being offered at no additional cost to all AARP Medicare Supplement planholders effective February 1, 2002.

AARP Nurse HealthLine, a service provided by Optum, is a valuable resource designed to respond to the unique health needs of older Americans. It was developed on the premise that people should be able to access individualized information and support to help them make educated decisions about health concerns.

AARP Nurse HealthLine provides convenient, 24 hour, seven-day-a-week access to registered nurses for medical guidance about symptoms and illnesses. The service offers immediate access to nurses who offer counsel based on more than 700 physician-reviewed guidelines. It's designed to complement the care that individuals receive from their doctors by providing assistance in preparing for upcoming doctor appointments, or answering questions following doctor visits on topics such as diagnosis, tests, treatments or medications. Nurses also provide individuals with preventive health care information to help avoid future medical problems and advice on developing healthy living habits. Another key feature of AARP Nurse HealthLine is access to an audio health information library including over 1,100 topics, many of which are specifically geared to older Americans.

Recognizing that language can be a barrier to accessing health care, individuals who utilize AARP Nurse HealthLine will have access to Spanish- speaking nurses through a dedicated telephone line. Additionally, the service includes an audiotape health library with over 500 topics in Spanish. Individuals who utilize AARP Nurse HealthLine will also benefit from a language line that provides translation assistance in over 140 languages. A TTY/TDD service is also available for the hearing impaired. In the coming weeks, AARP Medicare Supplement planholders will begin receiving brochures and other materials that include the toll-free AARP Nurse HealthLine telephone number.

AARP Nurse HealthLine incorporates AARP's commitment to providing access to services, support, information and resources that assist members in managing their health. Optum is a UnitedHealth Group company that offers specialized benefits, services and resources to improve health and well-being.
