AAA's Third Travel Challenge Strives to Improve Travel and Geographic Literacy among High School Students.


IRVING, Texas Irving (pronounced 'er-ving') is a city located in the U.S. state of Texas within Dallas County. High school students throughout the country have just a few weeks to touch up on their travel knowledge. If teens can answer questions like: "If you're visiting the National Cowboy Museum, what state are you in?"; "Which country is called the "Land of the Golden Fleece Golden Fleece, in Greek mythology, the magic fleece of the winged ram that saved Phrixus and Helle, the children of Nephele and Athamas, from the jealousy of Ino, Athamas' second wife. ?"; and, "Where will you find the gateway to Acadia National Park Acadia National Park, 48,419 acres (19,603 hectares), SE Maine, on the Atlantic coast; est. 1919. The park occupies a major portion of Mount Desert Island, Isle au Haut and several smaller islands, and the southern tip of Schoodic Peninsula. ?", then they might be well on the way to winning an expense-paid trip for two to Orlando to compete for more than $100,000 in college scholarships.

The trip and scholarships are part of the AAA Travel High School Challenge The AAA Travel High School Challenge (sometimes shortened to AAA Travel Challenge) is an annual travel-themed scholarship competition run by the American Automobile Association, open to students in grades 9-12 in the fifty United States and the District of Columbia. , a contest that begins with a 40-question online competition Jan. 10-19. The contest aims to increase teens' travel knowledge and geographic literacy while creating awareness of career opportunities in the travel and tourism industry.

.com/TravelChallenge. As an incentive, students who enroll for the AAA Travel High School Challenge before Dec. 31, 2004, and complete the test in January 2005, will automatically qualify for a random drawing to receive one of two $500 U.S. savings bonds.

The national contest is open to all U.S. students in grades 9-12 (public, private or home-schooled), with winners from all 50 states and the District of Columbia District of Columbia, federal district (2000 pop. 572,059, a 5.7% decrease in population since the 1990 census), 69 sq mi (179 sq km), on the east bank of the Potomac River, coextensive with the city of Washington, D.C. (the capital of the United States).  traveling to Universal Orlando May 7-10, 2005 to compete for one of three $25,000 first-place scholarships or three $10,000 second-place scholarships.

"The AAA Travel High School Challenge is more than just a geography contest - it sharpens students' travel literacy by focusing on many aspects of travel and tourism destinations, including culture, transportation and history," said Rose Rougeau, spokesperson for AAA Texas.

Designed by AAA Travel and travel industry educator Dr. Marc Mancini, the challenge encourages teens to study travel destinations and to consider careers in the travel and tourism industry.
