AAA: THANKSGIVING HOLIDAY TRAVEL TO BE HEAVIEST SINCE AT LEAST 1985

ORLANDO, Fla., Nov. 18 /PRNewswire/ -- More Americans expect to take a trip at least 100 miles from home during the Thanksgiving holiday period than in any year since the American Automobile Association began making travel projections in 1985.
AAA expects 28.9 million Americans to travel this holiday, up 1 percent from 1992.
Approximately 24.1 million Americans will travel by auto, light truck or recreational vehicle, .8 percent more than a year ago.
In addition, airports and other public transportation terminals are expected to be busy as another 4.8 million people travel by airplane, train or bus. This is 2 percent higher than last Thanksgiving.
AAA's travel projections are based on a national probability survey of 1,500 adults by the U.S. Travel Data Center, which does special research for the motoring federation.
Heaviest motor vehicle travel this Thanksgiving will be in the Southeast, with 6.1 million Americans on the roads, and in the Midwest, with 4.8 million motorists expected. Other regional projections are: West, 4.7 million travelers; Northeast, 4.5 million; and Great Lakes, 4 million.
Of those traveling, 52 percent expect to stay overnight at a relative or friend's house, compared to 66 percent last year.
In addition, 32 percent plan to stay at a hotel or motel, compared to 17 percent last Thanksgiving.
Other planned accommodations are: cabin or condo, 6 percent; camper, trailer, tent or recreational vehicle, 4 percent; boat or ship, 1 percent; other, 1 percent. Four percent of those surveyed didn't know or didn't expect to stay overnight.
Holiday travelers plan to visit the following destinations: city, 35 percent; town or rural area, 30 percent; ocean or beach, 17 percent; mountain area, 6 percent; lake area, 4 percent; theme or amusement park, 4 percent; state or national park, 1 percent; and 3 percent hadn't decided.
AAA is a not-for-profit federation of 137 motor clubs with more than 1,000 offices providing some 35 million members in the United States and Canada with travel, insurance, financial and auto-related services.
