A66 upgrade pledge after budget cut fears.


The upgrade on the A66 at Long Newton will go ahead, despite rumours the project could be scrapped.

The scheme is one of eight major road improvements in the country under threat because of spending cuts.

A report in a national newspaper this week claimed the projects could be postponed because of the need to divert di·vert

But today a Highways Agency spokesman denied the schemes had been axed. He said: "They are in the Government's Targeted Programme of Improvements and will go ahead.

"We are planning to start work on them during this financial year. They are at different stages of development, and in the light of the Spending Review we may need to consider when we start on site."

The Treasury will complete the Spending Review in July July: see month. .

In December, ministers agreed to a grade-separated junction at Long Newton, and a new link road between the village and Elton.
