Police closed the expressway at Junction 10 in Bangor at 9am, after days of rain caused the road surface to buckle into a ridge running between the lanes for 20 metres.

It came as torrential downpours continued to create misery across Gwynedd and Anglesey, with homes and businesses flooded, and several roads closed.

The Met Office said more rain is forecast today, with around 40mm expected to fall on higher ground, before sunshine and showers tomorrow.

The alert on the A55 saw traffic diverted as emergency repairs were carried out. The Expressway was reopened at 10.30am.

Further investigations on the same problem were later carried out at two other sites near the Britannia Bridge Britannia Bridge (Pont Britannia) is a bridge across the Menai Strait between the island of Anglesey and the mainland of Wales, originally a tubular bridge of wrought iron rectangular box-section spans, and now a two-tier steel truss arch bridge. , with single lane closures while the work was done.

He said: "The defect was not structural but a problem with material used to repair the joint in the surfacing along the centre of the westbound carriageway.

"This material was laid by a contractor that has been only used for work between junctions 8 and 10.

"The maintenance contractor has attended two other sites in the vicinity of junction 8 this morning with police assistance. The remainder of the reinstatement appears sound and is being regularly monitored."

Further investigations will now take place to find a permanent solution to the problem.

The continued heavy rain over Thursday night and yesterday morning saw dozens of homes flooded, with Llanberis one of the worst areas affected as Llyn Padarn Llyn Padarn is a glacially formed lake in Snowdonia, Wales, an example of a moraine dammed lake. The lake is approximately 2 miles long and at its deepest point is 94 feet deep.  burst its banks.

, 39, who lives at Pen Llyn, close to Llyn Padarn, saw his house flooded for the second time in four years.

He said: "I went down at 3am to find water coming into the house. It was heartbreaking to see and there was nothing we could do to stop it. We just had to sit there while it flooded our living rooms and hall.

"The waters came from Llyn Padarn and also the river that runs from the lake, so we had it from both sides. It is worrying that more rain is forecast."

The Spice of Llanberis Indian restaurant was also hit, losing thousands of pounds worth of stock and freezers when waters flooded the cellars.

Owner and manager Afzal Ali said: "It is a nightmare. The rain started coming in on Thursday night, and kept on coming. The fire service did all they could to help but it has wrecked a lot of stock and equipment.

"You just do not need this as a small business but we will be back open as soon as it is possible and safe to do so."

Fire crews attended more than 15 flooding incidents yesterday, with Caernarfon, Pwllheli and Amlwch among the areas affected.

Cledwyn Davies, 66, saw his home on Riverside Terrace, Pwllheli, flooded yesterday morning.

He said: "The waters came in at around 11am in the morning, there was nothing we could do. We had time to move furniture but the carpet is wrecked.

"There are six cottages here and we are all in the same boat. It is depressing but we have all rallied around and we have helped some elderly neighbours, ensuring their families were aware of what had happened. Every house now has their wrecked carpets out in the garden.

"We were flooded back in 2005 when we were on holiday and that time we lost even more - at least this time we were here and able to save as much as we could. It is now a case of having to mop out and let things dry up."

In Gwynedd flooding led to the closure of the A4085 at Betws Garmon, Ln Cob Bach in Pwllheli, the A499 from Riverside, Pwllheli to Llanbedrog, and at the traffic lights on the A497 near Penmaen, between Pwllheli and Efailnewydd.. The Conwy Valley railway line between Llandudno and Blaenau Ffestiniog will remain closed over the weekend due to flooding.

Network Rail are now investigating the damage and assessing when the line is likely to open.
