WATERTOWN, Mass. -- A123Systems, developer and producer of state-of-the-art Automotive Class Lithium Ion A rechargeable battery technology introduced in 1991 that provides greater charge per pound than nickel metal hydride. In 1993, Toshiba introduced the first notebook in the U.S. with a Li-ion battery. ([TM]) batteries, today announced their partnership with Google in converting the company's growing fleet of Hybrid Electric Vehicles (HEVs) into Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicles (PHEVs). The vehicles are converted via the installation of Hymotion's Battery Range Extender See Media Center Extender, bus extender and DOS extender.  Module (BREM), powered with A123Systems's Nanophosphate[TM] lithium ion batteries.

A123Systems developed its proprietary doped Nanophosphate chemistry with the assistance of the Department of Energy FreedomCar program and has received more than $102 million in private investment. With performance validated by various National Labs and automotive OEMs, A123Systems' batteries achieve the superior durability and safety required for automotive use of lithium ion technology.

"Our automotive class cells are designed to cost-effectively address the specific requirements of automotive manufacturers today, including power and energy density, durability, and safety, that have hindered the development of market-ready PHEVs in the past," said David Vieau, president and CEO (1) (Chief Executive Officer) The highest individual in command of an organization. Typically the president of the company, the CEO reports to the Chairman of the Board.  of A123Systems. "Google's efforts will accelerate progress in the PHEV market and provides us with another way to demonstrate commitment to the future of transportation, prove the efficiency of our cells, and ultimately speed these vehicles to market."

The company's PHEV optimized M1HD technology offers superior calendar and cycle life at high depth-of-discharge, as well as excellent power density for charge-sustaining operation. Additionally, the cells leverage the company's existing low-cost, high-volume manufacturing techniques to offer the hybrid and plug-in hybrid vehicle For other types of "Hybrid Transportation", see .

A hybrid vehicle (HV) is a vehicle that uses two or more distinct power sources to propel the vehicle such as:

Hymotion, recently acquired by A123Systems, is the leading fabricator of aftermarket plug-in hybrid conversions. The BREMs are lightweight, compact and require minimal modification to the stock vehicle. Hymotion's BREMs can be easily installed in the spare tire well of most hybrid vehicles, enabling the conversion of current HEVs into PHEVs capable of achieving 100 or more miles per gallon Noun 1. miles per gallon - the distance traveled in a vehicle powered by one gallon of gasoline or diesel fuel

The term initially referred to the company that made the products (the "original" manufacturer), but eventually became widely used to refer to the organization that buys the products and  battery pack and can be installed in less than 2 hours.

"Working with Google on this initiative enables us to showcase to the public the value that PHEVs can provide, including the maximization of fuel economy and the reduction of carbon dioxide carbon dioxide, chemical compound, CO2, a colorless, odorless, tasteless gas that is about one and one-half times as dense as air under ordinary conditions of temperature and pressure.  emissions," explained Ricardo Bazzarella, co-founder and president of Hymotion. "As interest in clean energy technologies continues to grow, we anticipate that this project will help drive increased demand for fuel-efficient vehicles."

Part of Google's RechargeIT initiative aimed at reducing greenhouse gas emissions and oil dependence by accelerating the adoption of PHEVs, this partnership enables both organizations to demonstrate the potential of PHEVs to the public by collecting and publishing performance data on an ongoing basis at www.google.com/recharge. Compared with HEVs, PHEVs employ a larger battery pack which extends the electric equivalent driving range, providing improved fuel economy and lower greenhouse gas emissions. Converted PHEVs have the potential to reduce oil consumption by as much as 75 percent and CO2 emissions by up to 50 percent over today's internal combustion engine Internal combustion engine
