The North East interim transport board considered turning it into a dual carriageway, through the central Government regional funding allocation, in 2006. Had it decided to do so, work would have begun this year.

However, the scheme was eventually ditched because of a lack of money after the board decided not to designate it as one of its priorities

MP for Berwick Sir Alan Beith said last night: "This is another tragedy on the single carriageway section of the A1, although we do not yet know whether the road layout was a factor in the accident, and our thoughts are with the families and friends of those who died."
