Aton Willem Nieuwenhuis (born on 22 May 1864 in Papendrecht), who was a medical officer in the Dutch East Indies Dutch East Indies: see Indonesia. army stationed in 1892 at Sambas, West Kalimantan West Kalimantan (Indonesian: Kalimantan Barat often abbreviated to Kalbar) is a province of Indonesia. It is one of four Indonesian provinces in Kalimantan, the Indonesian part of the island of Borneo. Its capital city Pontianak is located right on the Equator line. , was the first Dutchman to cross Borneo from the west to the east coast, from Pontianak to Samarinda, in 1896-97.
