A.V.-BUENA DRAW IS FINE WITH COACH.

Byline: Lee Barnathan Daily News Staff Writer

Antelope Valley High School Antelope Valley High School is located in Lancaster, California and is part of the Antelope Valley Union High School District. It was founded in 1912[1]. It is located in the Mojave Desert.  boys' basketball coach Tom Mahan breathed a sigh of relief when he saw the Southern Section Division I-A playoff bracket.

Palmdale coach Garry Phelps was not as pleased with the Division I-AA

pairings.

Such were the mixed reactions when the top two Golden League teams discovered their fates Sunday. League champion A.V. will host Buena in the first round, and Palmdale hosts Santa Monica Santa Monica (săn`tə mŏn`ĭkə), city (1990 pop. 86,905), Los Angeles co., S Calif., on Santa Monica Bay; inc. 1886. Tourism and retailing are important, and the city has motion-picture, biotechnology, and software industries. .

In other matchups, Highland will travel to Simi Valley Simi Valley (sē`mē, sĭm`ē), city (1990 pop. 100,217), Ventura co., SW Calif. in an oil, fruit, and farm region; laid out 1887, inc. 1969.  in Division I-AA, Paraclete will host St. Paul St. Paul

You will often find them in between plains and mountains, near major rivers, or randomly anywhere. The only places without rolling hills are deserts and flood plains.  Prep.

All games are Friday at 7:30 p.m.

What made Mahan so pleased was his placement in the division's fourth region. Antelope Valley (20-6) drew Buena instead of either Royal or Pasadena, which Mahan thought would be more difficult opponents.

He also was pleased the region's top-seeded team, Hart, is on the opposite end of the bracket. Hart and A.V. wouldn't play until the regional final (third round).

``We did well,'' Mahan said. ``When I saw Buena, I thought it's not that tough a draw. I thought I'd see Royal, or face Hart in the second round.''

Phelps is pleased the 16-9 Falcons received a home game against Santa Monica, the Bay League's fourth-place team. He said the Golden League and high-desert teams usually are not respected enough to earn a first-round home game. Palmdale has lost just three league home games in the past five years.

Phelps' objections lie in how the Southern Section uses geography to place teams in brackets. Palmdale could play league rival Highland in the second round, provided both teams win. Or the Falcons could face Simi Valley, which beat them earlier this season in the Simi Valley tournament.

``I'm not sold on it,'' Phelps said. ``You'd like to go out and see what other parts (of the section) are doing.''

Highland coach Lyn Boop thinks it's a smart move on the part of the Southern Section to group by geography and save transportation costs. But beating the 7-18 Bulldogs' first-round opponent will be a daunting daunt

``They have guards taller than my center,'' Boop said.

Highland, meanwhile, played competition over its head and wound up with a losing record. The Bulldogs also have just eight players for Friday after two quit and one was dropped to the junior varsity.
