Byline: Karen Maeshiro Daily News Staff Writer

A Lancaster lab technician described as a ``poster child for Social Security fraud'' has been sentenced to 16 months in federal prison for unlawfully obtaining more than $112,000 in benefits.

From 1989-97, Patricia Mercedes Carrasco, 33, obtained benefits by using the name Patty Burgos and by claiming that she was disabled by chronic depression and an ulcer. While receiving the disability payments, Carrasco was working and using her true name.

``She indicated she initially was entitled to disability benefits and then at a certain point she obtained employment,'' Assistant U.S. Attorney Lee Arian said. ``Because she needed the money she continued to receive the benefits when she shouldn't have.''
