A.V. VS. SYLMAR: SPEED TEST; INTERSECTIONAL AT LANCASTER ALSO MATCHES TWO TOP AREA COACHES.

Byline: Gary Washburn Daily News Staff Writer

There's over 40 years of coaching experience in their voices. And that's why you don't hear them talk too much about the opponent.

Sylmar High School Sylmar High School is a public school in the northeast San Fernando Valley in the Sylmar district of Los Angeles, California. Established in the 1950s, it is part of the Los Angeles Unified School District, District 2, and serves more than 3,600 students in grades 9-12.  football coach Jeff Engilman and Antelope Valley's Brent Newcomb have a mutual respect, so they know the other team will be prepared.

When their teams meet tonight at Antelope Valley This article is about the Los Angeles County region. For the census-designated place in Wyoming, see Antelope Valley-Crestview, Wyoming.

The Antelope Valley
, the second of the two-year series, the focus will be on the coaches. That makes for a possible classic game.

Engilman's club is trying to return to City supremacy SUPREMACY. Sovereign dominion, authority, and preeminence; the highest state. In the United States, the supremacy resides in the people, and is exercises by their constitutional representatives, the president and congress. Vide Sovereignty. . Newcomb is trying to push his Antelopes back to the top of the Golden League. Both long-time coaches, icons at their respective schools, realize the game will be won on the field, not in the coaching box.

``We are trying to avoid those mental mistakes,'' said Engilman, whose team lost to Antelope Valley 28-21 last season. ``I know Brent will have his team ready. They are still Antelope Valley. I didn't see anything different from before.''

fashion. He does have the pressure of winning a Golden League title after Highland snapped the Antelopes' five-year streak last season. Littlerock is improved. Palmdale is 2-0. Highland is talented. Quartz Hill remains strong. Even Lancaster has a win. It doesn't get easier.

``We have to try to learn and be competitive and pull off some upsets down the line,'' Newcomb said. ``We have a young team and we're learning. We don't have the players we did last season.''

Last season the Antelopes were loaded. Tony Walker, Eric Mobley Eric Mobley (born February 1 1970 in the Bronx, New York) is an American former professional basketball player who was selected by the National Basketball Association's Milwaukee Bucks in the 1st round (18th overall) of the 1994 NBA Draft.  and Gary Hardy are gone. And right when Newcomb was trying to prepare a rebuilding year, he suffered a heart attack.

``I have half a heart,'' Newcomb joked. ``So I can't get as involved as I used to. I let my assistants do a lot of work and maybe they'll let me call a play once in a while.''

Don't buy that. The Antelopes are very much Newcomb-influenced. Quarterback Justin Mobley - brother of Eric - is one of the area's best. Mobley has thrown for 175 yards and one touchdown.

``Mobley is an outstanding athlete,'' Engilman said. ``Their quarterback can make a lot of plays. They're big on the line and very talented.''

The Antelopes depended on speed last year. And they may be a tad slower this season. Sylmar's speed improvement, which has pleased Engilman, makes this an intriguing in·trigue

LaPorte has been a pleasant surprise. He's made a smooth transition to new position, passing for 238 yards and one touchdown.

Newcomb was especially impressed with Sylmar all-purpose player Shaun Avalos, who has caught eight of those passes for 105 yards and will also play defensive back, punt and kick. The key for Sylmar could be moving the ball on the ground.

Tailbacks Errol Bowen and Donald Carpenter have combined for 245 yards in 36 carries. That's been good enough to allow LaPorte to throw the ball without heavy pressure.

Antelope Valley will definitely test LaPorte. Linemen Dontay Wilson and Luis Vasquez had fine games against Sylmar last season.

GAME OF THE WEEK: SYLMAR AT ANTELOPE VALLEY

STRENGTHS

Sylmar: The Spartans are confident and have a good combination of running and passing. Quarterback Joey LaPorte has played in big games before and the defensive line is one of the best in the area. Sylmar is quicker, more talented and more disciplined than last season. It shoulDd avoid those silly mistakes that cost it last year's game.

Antelope Valley: The Antelopes play well at home. Quarterback Justin Mobley is skilled and will give Sylmar trouble with his versatility. The Antelopes have played in big games before and have beaten Loyola and Bishop Amat at home in the past few years. The coaching of Brent Newcomb makes them very tough to beat.

WEAKNESSES

Sylmar: Mental mistakes. The Spartans have not faced a team with Antelope Valley's talent, so how they will react? This is LaPorte's third game at quarterback and he will need to make quick decisions when Antelope Valley steps up on defense. The tailbacks and receivers will need to make plays. Lineman Ray Solis is also banged up.

Antelope Valley: There's no Tony Walker, Gary Hardy or Eric Mobley, so the Antelopes are not the skilled team of the past. They lost to Las Vegas Las Vegas (läs vā`gəs), city (1990 pop. 258,295), seat of Clark co., S Nev.; inc. 1911. KEY PLAYERS

OVERALL

Sylmar: The Spartans might need their best effort in three years to win. They have the talent, but when was the last time they have beaten a quality team in a big game? It was 1994 when Sylmar won the City 4-A championship. Sylmar has that potential.

Antelope Valley: A good game plan along with some execution could be enough. But if the Antelopes make mistakes and mental errors, Sylmar could run away with the game. This is a young team and some picked it to finish fourth in the Golden League.
