A.V. UNION TEACHERS OK DISTRICT PACT EDUCATORS TO GET RETROACTIVE RAISES.

Byline: Karen Maeshiro Staff Writer

LANCASTER - The Antelope Valley Union High School District The Antelope Valley Union High School District (A.V.U.H.S.D.) is located in the Antelope Valley area of California, in northern Los Angeles County.

The district includes eight public high schools, one trade school, and two continuation high schools in the cities of Palmdale
became the first locally to end contract-negotiation deadlocks when teachers approved a tentative contract that gives them a 2 percent raise for the past school year but no pay hike this current school year.

The vote, which concluded Tuesday, ended nearly four months of an impasse im·passe

in negotiations between the district and the teachers union.

``The teachers passed the collective bargaining agreement The contractual agreement between an employer and a Labor Union that governs wages, hours, and working conditions for employees and which can be enforced against both the employer and the union for failure to comply with its terms.  for the 2001-02 and 2002-03 school year. Now it goes to the board for their approval,'' said Gary Roberts Gary Roberts is the name of:

Teachers' benefits will be paid for in both years, Roberts said. The district has about 870 teachers. Roberts declined to reveal the vote tally.

Until Tuesday, the high school district was one of seven Antelope Valley school districts in which teacher contract talks had stalled and independent mediators were called or will be called in to try to break the deadlocks.

In at least two of the districts, Eastside and Lancaster, mediation has not resolved the impasses, and the talks have been certified for the next stage of negotiations called fact-finding.

The proposed contract was the result of a meeting both sides held last week with a mediator, the third such get-together, Roberts said.

The voting took place one day before today's deadline to turn in a new benefits package to an agency that manages benefits for the district.

``We have to get a new benefits package to them by a specific date, or we would have to pay out of pocket,'' Roberts said.

The teachers union paid for a Sierra Highway Sierra Highway is a road in Southern California, United States. It runs from Tunnel Station near the north limit of the City of Los Angeles, where it intersects with San Fernando Road and Foothill Boulevard, as well as Interstate 5, and continues north to Mojave, mostly paralleling  billboard, which went up prematurely Aug. 29, that said, ``Welcome to the Antelope Valley, home of 800-plus high school teachers without a contract.''

``At the time when the executive board of the AVTA AVTA Advanced Vehicle Testing Activity  approved the billboard, we felt we had to take our position to the public and let them know we were unhappy with how negotiations were going. We thought it would go up around Sept. 3. If mediation was positive, we could stop it from going up,'' Roberts said.
