Aimed at reducing the statistics that have labeled the Antelope Valley This article is about the Los Angeles County region. For the census-designated place in Wyoming, see Antelope Valley-Crestview, Wyoming.

The Antelope Valley
a hotspot for child abuse, 80,000 pamphlets are going out to give tips on how to recognize and report child abuse, and telling parents how to reduce stress.

The pamphlets, which have been distributed to local businesses for their customers to pick up, are being put out by The Children's Center of the Antelope Valley in conjunction with its annual ``Blue Ribbon'' campaign and National Child Abuse Prevention Month.

``This is really a child abuse prevention and awareness campaign,'' said Esther Gillies, the center's executive director. ``We are trying to take a positive approach; it is a very ugly problem.''

To kick off its awareness campaign, the child abuse center unveiled a bronze plaque in a small flower garden filled with red, white and blue petunias Monday outside the Lancaster Western Hotel Museum.

The plaque asks for remembrance of children who have died from abuse - 14 in the Antelope Valley in the past five years.

A similar plaque and garden are to be dedicated April 30 in Palmdale's Courson Park, symbolizing sym·bol·ize

``The Antelope Valley has twice the reporting rate of any place in Los Angeles County,'' said Barbara Merritt, chairwoman of the monthlong awareness campaign.

Started in 1990, the Children's Center provides counseling and other services to 300 to 350 children a week, on courses of treatment that usually last six months to a year for each child, financed by local fund raising, government and corporate grants and other sources.

For its awareness campaign, the center printed three two-page pamphlets - ``Answers to Common Questions about Child Abuse and Neglect,'' ``Stress Reducing Trips for Parents'' and ``How to Recognize and Report Child Abuse.''

The pamphlets were financed by donations from more than 30 businesses, individuals and organizations, officials said.
