LANCASTER -- The notion that today's youths are self-absorbed and do little to help others is a misconception.

That's according to according to

 Grace Resource Center Director Steve Baker Steve Baker (born September 8, 1978 in Pontefract, West Yorkshire) is an English professional footballer who is a defender and currently plays for Gateshead.

Baker has played for a number of clubs including Middlesbrough, Huddersfield Town, Darlington, Hartlepool and
, who runs one of the Antelope Valley's most prominent charities.

A cadre of area high school students today will take action in support of Baker's assertion.

For their senior project, 12 Antelope Valley Union High School District The Antelope Valley Union High School District (A.V.U.H.S.D.) is located in the Antelope Valley area of California, in northern Los Angeles County.

The district includes eight public high schools, one trade school, and two continuation high schools in the cities of Palmdale
 students organized the Second Annual Walk Against Hunger, which will be held today at Clear Channel Stadium.

Registration booths open a half-hour before the 8 a.m. event, which includes a two-hour walk and an approximately hourlong prize ceremony.

The event is open to the public.

The student organizers are Vanessa Gonzalez, Yesenia Castillo, Katherine Harris Katherine Harris (born April 5, 1957, Key West, Florida) is a former Secretary of State of Florida and member of the US House of Representatives. Harris won the 2002 election to represent Florida's 13th congressional district in the United States House of Representatives. , Arreanna Ramstein, Jennifer Ruiz, Briana Sandoval, Hassan Stephens, Andrew McSorley, Makeda McCauley, Dario Rivers, Allison Pineda and Cynthia Herrera.

AVUHSD AVUHSD Antelope Valley Union High School District (California)  special- education instructor Steve Scheper helped coordinate the students' efforts.

Baker said involving teens in the event is as much about helping those less fortunate as it is about developing future leaders Future Leaders is a UK schools-led charitable organisation that aims to widen the pool of talented leaders especially for urban challenging secondary schools. It was founded in March 2006 by Nat Wei, a former founder of Teach First. .

"I think it's opened their eyes, that for many people, (hunger) is an issue, that you can do something about it," Baker said.

The first 250 participants who pledge $25 or more will receive a pancake breakfast and a T-shirt, and those who raise more than $250 are eligible to win one of two laptop computers.

"It's an opportunity for people to come out, have a good time and raise money so we can feed people," Baker said.
