The Antelope Valley
students' SAT scores decreased last school year, results released Tuesday show.

Antelope Valley Union High School District The Antelope Valley Union High School District (A.V.U.H.S.D.) is located in the Antelope Valley area of California, in northern Los Angeles County.

The district includes eight public high schools, one trade school, and two continuation high schools in the cities of Palmdale
students' average score on the verbal portion of the 2001-02 Scholastic Assessment Test was 477, down from 482 the previous year.

The average math score was 474, down from 478 from the prior year.

However, the number of district test-takers increased more than 7 percent from 940 to 1,009.

``One of the factors we need to take into consideration is there's a big increase in the number of students who are participating,'' said Susan Custer, the district's director of curriculum, instruction and special programs.

Scores at all district schools were down except for Quartz Hill High School Quartz Hill High School is a public, co-educational high school located in Lancaster, California. Founded in 1964, it is the third oldest comprehensive high school in the Antelope Valley High School District (AVHSD).  in both the verbal and math sections, and Littlerock High School Littlerock High School is a public, co-educational high school located in Littlerock, California. Quartz Hill High students scored 518 on the verbal and 531 on the math, up from 509 and 513 the previous year. The school's scores were above the state and national averages.

Littlerock High's math scores went up from 433 to 439.

At Antelope Valley High School Antelope Valley High School is located in Lancaster, California and is part of the Antelope Valley Union High School District. It was founded in 1912[1]. It is located in the Mojave Desert. , the average verbal score was 458, down from 464, and the average math score was 446, down from 471.

Antelope Valley High Assistant Principal Gil Lara said there's been a trend that scores have been dropping.

``A larger pool of test-takers will result more in a spectrum of scores,'' Lara said.

One bright spot is Antelope Valley High students who took both the SAT I and the SAT II tests. Their averages were 548 for verbal and 510 for math, Lara said.

``That puts us competitive. Those are students who are headed to UC (University of California The University of California has a combined student body of more than 191,000 students, over 1,340,000 living alumni, and a combined systemwide and campus endowment of just over $7.3 billion (8th largest in the United States). ) schools,'' Lara said.

Lara added that Antelope Valley and Littlerock high schools are two schools in the district that have started the AVID, or Advancement Via Individual Determination, program targeting bright students who because of family or socioeconomic background don't have aspirations aspirations nplaspiraciones fpl (= ambition); ambición f
