Focusing on a ``flower child'' about to be drafted, the classic '60s musical takes a look at the turmoil and changes of that time - but minus the nudity that made the 1968 Broadway production so controversial. That was eliminated in a 1995 rewrite.

``The '60s was a turning point for this country,'' said Rick Roemer, director of the Antelope Valley College theater department. ``The youth got a voice in the '60s. It truly was a revolution.

``A lot of the catalyst was the Vietnam War. There's a lot to say about our society. It just brings up a lot of those questions.''

Called by one reviewer possibly the most important musical offering of the era, ``Hair'' opened off-Broadway and made its Broadway debut in 1968.

Reviewers said watching ``Hair'' was not a conventional theater experience, because the play has little plot and the emphasis is on the music - ``Age of Aquarius Age of Aquarius

``It's such an open script, such an open thing,'' Roemer said. ``We put our own stamp on it. We're doing our own thing with it, and I think that's the way it works out the best.''

``It's a really unique set that we have,'' he added. ``We've turned this Black Box Theatre into a unique environment. It's very unconventional.''

The theater department decided on ``Hair'' as a way to get people ages 18 to 30 interested in live performance, Roemer said.

``Eighteen- to 30-year-olds are not brought up to go to live performances. I'm trying to get them into the theater,'' he said. ``I'm trying to build an audience of all age ranges. I think this is a show they'll go to. It's rock and roll.''

Roemer hopes the audience will come away from the show with the feeling that the cast tapped into the spirit of the '60s.

``I think people are going to come away from this . . . being entertained, and profoundly moved,'' he said. ``That's what I hope.''

The production will open Friday, playing at 8 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays and 7 p.m. Sundays through Nov. 16 at the Black Box Theatre, in Building 300 at Antelope Valley College, 3041 W. Ave. K, Lancaster.
