Byline: Karen Maeshiro Daily News Staff Writer

Pearblossom School Principal Sharon Millen will go to Washington, D.C., this week to be recognized as one of the nation's top principals.

Millen, 54, has been named a 1998 National Distinguished Principal by the U.S. Department of Education and the National Association of Elementary School elementary school: see school.  Principals.

``Sharon just is an incredible walking, talking model of what a principal strives to be. She's incredibly kid-centered. She is just a bundle of energy and very supportive of parents, staff and children,'' said Fran Madison-Cohee, a past award winner and principal at White Oak School in Westlake Village. ``She is pretty incredible.''

Millen is one of 61 elementary and middle school principals who will be presented plaques plaques,

``This is not an individual award. This is team recognition. This not only includes staff and students, but parents and the community,'' Millen said.

Madison-Cohee said the send-off Millen received at the Castaic school where she was principal prior to coming to Pearblossom showed how well-regarded she was.

``When she got to school, every student had brought flowers. Her entire office was just full of flowers. That typifies how much people think of her,'' Madison-Cohee said.

In 1995, the Association of California School Administrators named her elementary school principal of the year.

When asked if she had gotten any other awards, Millen replied, ``In a daily way on my very own campus.''

Millen said she is guided by the belief that people can make a difference.

``As principal, I do set the tone for not only the children but for the adults that I interact with each day,'' Millen said. ``I need to bring to this job an up-to-date knowledge of instruction but also enthusiasm and energy and a real love for kids.''

As part of her nomination for the national award, letters of support were sent in by Keppel Superintendent Jean Fuller, a fellow principal, a teacher, a community leader and a parent.
