But overall, the Antelopes' senior and top runner was pleased with the 12th-place finish.

``I'm still building toward the end of the season, but I feel really good,'' Melena said. ``I've got a lot of confidence after this race.''

Confidence was just what Melena needed after several results didn't match up to the times he had at the same meet in 2003. Melena finished the 2.91-mile course at Mt. SAC Sac: see Sac and Fox.

in 15 minutes, 23 seconds, better than his invitational time last year.

``This time was four, five seconds faster,'' Melena said.

A time of 15:14 at the 2003 Southern Section Championships, also at Mt. SAC, earned Melena a trip to the state meet last season. His plans are to peak in a few weeks.

``I knew they wouldn't stay that fast, but at the same time, I had to push real hard to keep with them,'' Melena said.

Melena also said that his arms felt heavy coming off mile two and his race strategy turned to maintaining his pace.

Melena will race at the Golden League finals Wednesday at 2 p.m. at Pearblossom Park.

--No sweeps, just firsts: The girls' teams from Paraclete and Desert Christian skipped their respective sweeps races at Mt. SAC.

The teams ran varsity races instead, and both took first place.

Paraclete finished with a team time of 1 hour, 41 minutes and 45 seconds and Desert Christian came in at 1:43. The Spirits' Heidi Rocha (18:57) was one of 17 local runners at 19 minutes or below.

Desert Christian coach Dean Spoelstra said his young team would be better suited to the varsity race.

``They've been in some good races at other invites we've gone to,'' Spoelstra said. ``We've seen some (potential postseason teams) at bigger races. It worked out for us to run the varsity race this time.''

The Knights had five finishers inside the top 25. Nicole Richards (19:53) and Jessica Wick (19:55) broke the 20-minute mark.

Paraclete coach Ken Lemus said he kept Paraclete in the varsity race because the Spirits' confidence is riding high and he wanted it to remain as such as the team heads into the postseason.

Paraclete's team time, when factored into the Div. IV sweeps race, would have put the Spirits fifth behind the Southern Section's No. 1 team in Div. IV, Lutheran of Orange.

--Notables: Highland's Caitlin Fitzgerald was ninth in the girls' team sweeps race in 18:41 and Lancaster's Courtney Wheeler continued to set the Eagles' pace with a time of 18:58, top in her heat.

On the boys' side, Highland's Josh JOSH Joshua

Housinger and Kurtis Rohrenback logged fourth- and sixth-place finishes in their heat.

--Who goes? Invitees to the Southern Section Preliminaries at Mt. SAC on Nov. 13 will be determined Wednesday at Pearblossom Park. The league-ending meet, hosted by Littlerock, begins at 2 p.m.

The league's top three boys' and girls' teams qualify, as do the top three individuals not on a qualifying team, provided they finish in the top six at the meet.
