California Highway Patrol Officer Pat Weese already has picked out a place for his ``Officer of the Year'' plaque.

It'll sit atop his mantel and join the three other ``Officer of the Year'' awards he's received over his 26-year career as a CHP officer.

Weese was one of seven officers throughout the Antelope Valley honored Friday during the 1996 Law Day organized by the Antelope Valley Bar Association to recognize outstanding law enforcement officers.

``It's a great feeling,'' said Weese. ``I'll hang it proudly.''

Besides filling in as an officer in charge when there are no field supervisors working, Weese also has been selected as a field training officer and teaches methods of arrest.

``There's so many qualified individuals, I've just been lucky,'' said Weese. ``It's an honor to be nominated and even a greater honor to be selected.''

According to Antelope Valley CHP commander Lt. Lynne Jones, Weese is a fine officer and has maintained a high level of enthusiasm throughout his years on the job.

``He has high work standards and is a fine role model for other officers,'' said Jones.

Other officers chosen were Deputy Kevin Austin of the Kern County Sheriff's Department in Rosamond; Dennis Speer, an investigator for the California City Police Department; Los Angeles County sheriff's Deputy Steve Sylvies; Los Angeles County sheriff's Deputy Bailiff Ralph Wright; Roberta Record, a CHP officer from Mojave; and California State Prison correctional officer D.L. Quinn.

As the officer in charge for the afternoon shift serving 30,000 people, Austin exemplifies the high standards and quality performance residents of the Rosamond area have come to expect, said Kern County sheriff's Sgt. Jerry Sullivan.

Speer worked as a police officer for 19 years before becoming an investigator, a job he's performed for six years. As acting sergeant, he demonstrated a high level of stability and maturity, said California City police Lt. Wayne Dickerson.

An eight-year veteran of the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department, Sylvies has worked in numerous positions. He was one of the first ``Operation High Desert Storm'' deputies targeting high-crime areas in Lancaster. He also was a gang-crimes investigator, and worked on the ``Topbomb'' patrol project targeting specific crime problems in Lancaster.

In addition, he served as a station field training officer, and most recently was assigned as a liaison deputy for the city of Lancaster.

Wright, who works as a bailiff for Lancaster Superior Court Judge Frank Jackson, is one of the best at handling problem inmates. He's always aware of security and anticipates potential problems, said Sgt. Jack Roth.

Highly regarded by her supervisors and her peers, Record has an outstanding work ethic, dedication and motivation, said CHP Lt. F.E. Hermann, the Mojave station commander.

Quinn, a correctional officer for 11 years and eight months, performs his duties above expectations, said facility Capt. V. Johnson.
