A.V. MAN TO ATTEND CHARITY SUMMIT IN D.C.

Byline: Charles F. Bostwick Staff Writer

LANCASTER - The leader of a Lancaster food bank will travel to Washington, D.C., for a Republican congressional meeting to discuss giving government funds to ``faith-based'' charities.

Steve Baker Steve Baker (born September 8, 1978 in Pontefract, West Yorkshire) is an English professional footballer who is a defender and currently plays for Gateshead.

Baker has played for a number of clubs including Middlesbrough, Huddersfield Town, Darlington, Hartlepool and
, executive director of Grace Resource Center, said he sees the issue as one of separating such charities' religious ministry from the services they provide to the needy.

``People need both, but it isn't the government's job to be paying for that,'' Baker said.

Baker was named by U.S. Rep. Howard P. ``Buck'' McKeon, R-Santa Clarita, as his representative at the House-Senate Majority Faith-Based Summit, which is expected to draw 400 delegates from around the United States United States, officially United States of America, republic (2005 est. pop. 295,734,000), 3,539,227 sq mi (9,166,598 sq km), North America. The United States is the world's third largest country in population and the fourth largest country in area. .

Baker's travel will be financed by the Lancaster West Rotary Club, which on Friday gave him a check for $1,250.

Baker said he had originally decided he couldn't afford to go, because his organization is nearly finished remodeling remodeling /re·mod·el·ing/ (re-mod´el-ing) reorganization or renovation of an old structure.

``He'll be able to bring back a wealth of information to the community that we can all use,'' said Mark Hemstreet, the club president.

The participants are scheduled to meet Tuesday with Attorney General John Ashcroft John David Ashcroft (born May 9 1942) is an American politician who was the 79th United States Attorney General. He served during the first term of President George W. Bush from 2001 until 2005. Ashcroft was previously the Governor of Missouri (1985 – 1993) and a U.S.  and on Wednesday with 15 Republican members of the House of Representatives and the Senate.

The meeting is intended to ``discuss how the public and private sectors can work together to extend services and a helping hand to the poor and needy of this country,'' said Rep. J.C. Watts Jr., R-Okla., the House Republican Conference chairman.

Watts last month introduced legislation that would allow ``faith-based'' organizations to compete for federal grants in the areas of housing, juvenile justice programs, community development block grants, job training, child welfare and child care services, crime prevention programs, senior citizen services, domestic violence programs and hunger relief, McKeon said.

Watts' legislation would also allow taxpayers who do not itemize To individually state each item or article.

The organization has 400 volunteers who serve more than 6,000 people a month, providing emergency groceries, hot meals, counseling, clothing and other aid.

``I had some homeless guys say, Hey, I hear you're going to Washington, D.C. Hey, that's cool,'' Baker said. ``They really feel like I'm going for them.''
