"Our investigation is continuing," Maynard said. "We still want to talk to more people who might have more information."

Terri King said her son was nearly killed in a traffic accident when he was 15, when he was hit by a car while crossing Rosamond Boulevard and Glendower Street. In that incident, he suffered multiple head, back and leg injuries after being thrown approximately 70 feet.

At that time, King underwent a life-saving brain surgery in which plates, straps and screws were inserted around his skull, his mother said.

Terri King said her son's condition has improved since Monday, when doctors said his chances of surviving were "slim."

"We're told that he's 21, and we should still have hope," she said.
