The Antelope Valley
Judo Club members have tucked 19 more wins under their black belts after the California Golden State Championships held earlier this month.

The team, now one of the top clubs in the country, brought in nine first-place, eight second-place and two third-place honors from the state competition.

``We took 23 of our members, and 22 of them placed, so we did extremely well,'' said club assistant Karen Wood. ``They did better than any other club there, I think.''

The team credits part of its success to the addition of two foreign exchange students who will be in the Antelope Valley for 10 months.

Philippe Oertli from Switzerland, a Swiss judo team member and current Swiss national champion, earned a first place. He attends Quartz Hill High School Quartz Hill High School is a public, co-educational high school located in Lancaster, California. Sebastian Boldt from Germany, who is attending Rosamond High School, earned a third place.

``Philippe and Sebastian were up against some tough competition, but they still performed extremely well,'' Wood said. ``They are a great addition to our club because they bring new techniques and inspiration to the team.''

Other first-place medal-winning members are team coach Steve Bell Steve Bell is the name of:
