A.V. IS GOLDEN ONCE AGAIN ANTELOPES DEFEND LEAGUE TITLE BY FINISHING OFF RIVAL PALMDALE A.V. 24, PALMDALE 14.

High players turned to each other, shook hands and shouted ``I'm a champ, you're a champ.''

And they were champions. Despite all predictions to the contrary prior to the season and problems during it, host Antelope Valley of Lancaster beat Palmdale 24-14 Friday to defend its Golden League title.

The players already had offered their own congratulations to the coaching staff, dousing offensive coordinator An offensive coordinator typically refers to the coach on a football team in the National Football League or College football who is in charge of the offense. ``They spared me because they know I'm too old,'' said Brent Newcomb, who won his ninth league title in 25 years as coach. ``It would have given me a heart attack.''

It was the second year in a row Palmdale (7-3, 4-1) has lost out to Antelope Valley (7-3, 5-0).

Antelope Valley struggled to a 2-3 start on the season, with offensive linemen brothers Jon and Josh King and fullback Sean Wallace each missing multiple games with injury. Linebacker Marcos Huerta, the team's best defensive player, was among five Antelopes suspended a game for a hazing Hazing is an often ritualistic test and a task, which may constitute harassment, abuse or humiliation with requirements to perform random, often meaningless tasks, sometimes as a way of initiation into a social group.  incident earlier in the season.

``We survived a lot of adversity,'' Brent Newcomb said. ``This title means a lot to us.''

The similarities between these teams stop at the winning tradition.

Palmdale relies on pretty passes from quarterback Jacob McCravey, who completed 13 of 30 for 195 yards. Antelope Valley, which attempted one pass, confuses defenses with a three-running back backfield.

``Our goal was to keep their offense off the field,'' quarterback Johnny Walker said. ``Palmdale has a great team but our offense is hard to stop.''

Barely into the second quarter, already there was more scoring than last year's 9-3 Antelope Valley win.

Walker ran up the middle for a 14-yard touchdown a minute into the second quarter to give Antelope Valley a 10-7 lead. He finished with 119 yards on 17 carries as the Antelopes piled up all 297 yards on the ground.

Wallace, who had 88 yards on 10 carries, scored on Antelope Valley's first two possessions of the third quarter.

The win especially was sweet for Walker, who was suspended for last season's victory over Palmdale for bringing a laser pen to school.

``We were at practice, confused because people were saying Palmdale was going to beat us,'' Walker said. ``It's always sweet to be the champs.''
