A.V. GROUP HONORS DEPUTY FOR LIFE-SAVING ACT.Byline: Karen Thacker Community Columnist LANCASTER - Los Angeles County sheriff's Deputy Gary W. Ferguson has received the 1996 Heroism and Excellence in Community Service Award from the Daughters of the American Revolution Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR), a Colonial patriotic society in the United States, open to women having one or more ancestors who aided the cause of the Revolution. The society was organized (1890) at Washington, D.C. (DAR), Antelope Valley chapter. The award was presented June 11 during a luncheon at the Desert Inn. In January, responding to a 911 call, Ferguson was able to partially dislodge a two-inch screw swallowed by a baby before the child was rushed to the hospital. When Ferguson arrived the 1-year-old child was not breathing. After a few whacks on the baby's back, the child began gasping for air. The Heroism and Excellence in Community Service Award is given annually to a local officer who contributed to the community in an outstanding manner. Regent Vivienne Lindsay and Mary S. Miller, awards chairwoman, presented the award. PALMDALE - Volunteering for the Special Olympics at UCLA UCLA University of California at Los Angeles UCLA University Center for Learning Assistance (Illinois State University) UCLA University of Carrollton, TX and Lower Addison, TX is becoming a habit for a group of Scouts from Troop 283. Troop members Todd Coursey, David Lummus, Mike Teddy, Chris Padgett, Dennis Padgett and Ray Wood, along with leaders Larry Coursey, Ron Salser and Carl Padgett made the trip last month to help with the annual event for mentally handicapped kids and adults. PALMDALE - Jordan Nilsson, an 18-year-old Palmdale High School graduate, has achieved the rank of Eagle Scout. He received the award in a Court of Honor a court or tribunal to investigate and decide questions relating to points of honor; as a court of chivalry, or a military court to investigate acts or omissions which are unofficerlike or ungentlemanly in their nature. Nilsson is from Troop 310 and has earned 22 merit badges. He is attending Antelope Valley College Antelope Valley College is a comprehensive community college located in Lancaster, California, USA. It is operated by the Antelope Valley Community College District, with a primary service area of 1,945 square miles covering portions of Los Angeles and Kern counties. . The community service project he organized to earn his Eagle badge was to plant trees and bushes along the entrance road of the Desert Lawn Memorial Park in Palmdale. ``I guess I wanted something important and lasting that people could enjoy for years to come,'' he said of the project. Nilsson coordinated all labor, over 100 man-hours, and donations required for completing the project. Funds were donated by the Knights of Columbus Knights of Columbus, American Roman Catholic society for men, founded (1882) at New Haven, Conn. (where its headquarters are still located), by Father Michael J. McGivney. for procuring shrubs, and the Lancaster Rotary Club donated trees. The project was completed in October 1995.
