The Jetta's driver made a sudden lane change in the path of a Ford Tempo The Ford Tempo was an American-built two-door coupe and four-door sedan produced by the Ford Motor Company from 1984 to 1994. It was the successor to the Ford Fairmont, and was replaced in 1994 by the Ford Contour. , forcing its driver to swerve into a guardrail at the Soledad Canyon Road overcrossing, tearing off the Tempo's right front wheel and flipping the car upside down, officials said.

``It's what we call a noncontact hit-and-run,'' California Highway Patrol Officer Rod Beadles said. ``The Jetta didn't stop. It's a hit-and-run suspect at this point.''

The Tempo's driver, Wayne Riepe, 61, of Palmdale, who was wearing a seat belt, was taken by ambulance to Antelope Valley Hospital with what officials described as minor injuries.

The 5:45 a.m. crash closed the right-hand southbound lane for 40 minutes, backing up traffic past the Pearblossom Highway on-ramp. Traffic on the Pearblossom Highway also backed up with commuters trying to get onto the freeway.
