``This is just a portion. We've got some real superstars as soon as we get the signatures on the contract,'' Ralph Bozigian, chairman of the fair's entertainment committee, said at a news conference announcing the entertainment lineup.

Checker performs Sunday, Aug. 26; Byrd on Monday, Aug. 27; Campbell on Tuesday, Aug. 28, and Destiny's Child on Wednesday, Aug. 29. Both Checker's and Campbell's shows are free with admission to the fair.

The concert series is sponsored by Robertson's Palmdale Honda.

``We're happy to be involved with the fair and to be an entertainment sponsor once again,'' said Ron Emard, general manager of Robertson's.

 Jr. Award for Entertainer of the Year the following week at the Soul Train Music Awards The Soul Train Music Awards is an annual award show aired in national syndication that honors the best in Black music and entertainment. It is produced by the producers of Soul Train, the program from which it takes its name. .

Their album ``Writings on the Wall'' has gone platinum six times.

Opening for Destiny's Child will be 14-year-old vocalist Stacie Orrico, who recently released her first album.

Byrd has two gold albums, two platinum albums and one double-platinum album, which contains Academy of Country Music Song of the Year winner ``Keeper of the Stars.''

Opening for Byrd will be country music group Lonestar, which has two gold records: ``Crazy Nights'' and ``Lonely Grill.''

Checker, best known for his 1960 hit ``The Twist'' that started a dance craze, performs on a ``Pay One Gate'' day at the fair. General admission is $10 and includes Checker's show as well as unlimited carnival rides.

Campbell, who had hits in the 1960s with ``Gentle on My Mind'' and ``Galveston'' and in the 1970s with ``Rhinestone Cowboy In general, a rhinestone cowboy is any man who wears the elaborate, stylized western wear made by rodeo tailors, especially as contrasted to a working cowboy or ranch hand. ,'' performs on the fair's Senior Day. Fair admission is free that day for senior citizens and handicapped persons.

Two more acts will be announced after the contracts are signed. One act is confirmed and one act is still in negotiations, fair officials said. They declined to state what type of acts they were.

``They've (residents) demanded this type of entertainment and support it, so of course we'll continue it year after year,'' Bozigian said.

Tickets to Byrd's concert are $25, $20 and $15. Tickets for Destiny's Child are $30, $25, and $20.

Concert tickets go on sale at 8 a.m. Saturday at the fairgrounds n. pl. 1. same as fairground. , 155 E. Ave. I, and will also be available through Ticketmaster.

Fair admission is $6 for adults and $4 for seniors and children age 6 to 15, up $1 from last year. Children under age 6 are admitted free. Presale admission tickets are available for $5 until Aug. 24. Carnival wristbands for unlimited carnival rides are $12 in advance or $15 at the fair.

The theme of this year's fair is ``Space Suits and Cowboy Boots,'' suggested by Janice Gantenbein of Leona Valley and selected through the fair's annual theme contest.
