Palmdale and Lancaster school officials say they make regular inspections of portable classroom ventilation systems to head off incidents like the youngsters reportedly sickened in a Saugus school.

Superintendent Steven Gocke and Palmdale School District The Palmdale School District is a school district that serves a major part of the city of Palmdale, California (USA).

The Palmdale School District was first formed in 1888. Approximately 28,000 students are enrolled in the Palmdale School District.
Superintendent Nancy Smith said last week that their districts have maintenance people assigned to check portable classroom ventilation systems regularly and change filters as needed as needed prn. See prn order. .

``Every time that somebody says there's a funny smell, we bring in a company, and they test the air quality again. We have never found any toxins,'' Smith said.

State environmental and health officials said they have tried for three years to educate school districts about the need to properly ventilate ventilate,

v 2. to provide the lungs with air from the atmosphere.
v 3. to open, to free, as in to openly express one's feelings.

Elementary in Saugus whose blood and urine contained high levels of chemicals commonly used to manufacture temporary classrooms.

A consultant hired by the Saugus district found that the vents had never been opened in the new building, though tests showed levels of chemicals in the air were below federal standards.

Los Angeles County supervisors voted last week to instruct county education officials to report in two weeks on inspection and installation standards in place regarding portable classrooms.

The board also told county health officials to report in two weeks on their findings regarding the chemicals found at the Saugus school.

In addition, the board told the county chief administrative officer A chief administrative officer (CAO) is responsible for administrative management of private, public or governmental corporations. The CAO is one of the highest ranking members of an organization, managing daily operations and usually reporting directly to the chief executive  to report on legislation that could be introduced to create standards for construction and installation of portable classrooms.

In Palmdale, the superintendent said the district has not had complaints that required bringing in an outside expert to check for toxics since probably 1-1/2 years ago, when the last of the district's 554 portable classrooms was installed.

Smith said the district's last real problem was four or five years ago with a portable classroom borrowed through a state program and previously used in a Riverside County school district.

The classroom had a leaky roof that allowed the growth of mold, creating a smell noticed by school staff.

``We took out insulation, the ceiling tile and completely replaced the carpeting as well,'' Smith said.

Gocke said the only problem he could recall with portable classrooms in Lancaster schools occurred in the mid-1980s. Good maintenance and good equipment generally prevents air contamination in portables, Gocke said.

Teachers Association of Lancaster President Geri Hazelton said she knows of no incidents of Lancaster students or teachers becoming ill from portable classroom contamination.

Most of Lancaster's portable classrooms have been purchased in the past couple of years, Hazelton said. Most older portable classrooms are now used for storage, she said.
