Northern Afleet, a 4-year-old colt with more than $600,000 in career winnings, is owned by Rancho Vista developers Gregg Anderson and Ron Waranch. ``We are so thrilled - we can't wait,'' said Anderson. ``He'll be one of the favorites in the Breeders' Cup sprint. He's as ready as he'll ever be.'' Northern Afleet has been in races from six furlongs to a mile and an eighth, but ``we felt we had the best shot at the sprint,'' Anderson said. Many local horse fans may remember Anderson and Waranch's horse named Palmdale - a successful racer that at age 9 is now into jumping and being geared up for the 2000 Olympics. ``He's a sound horse and he trains very well,'' Anderson said. Palmdale was one of the first horses the duo bought eight years ago. They planned to name him Rancho Vista, after their new housing development. But after a long day of buying eight or nine horses, Waranch went to fill out the paperwork. ``He was tired when he was submitting names and forgot the name of the development so he named him Palmdale,'' Anderson said. Although buying horses can be expensive, and not always bring back a profit, Anderson says he's been lucky so far. Northern Afleet, purchased for $60,000, has turned out the best so far. They've had offers in the millions to sell him, but plan to hang on and race him another year before retiring him to stud. Anderson and Waranch have been business associates for 30 years, developing land in Honolulu and Maui before settling into the Antelope Valley 15 years ago. Their 1,300-acre Rancho Vista housing and shopping center development is about halfway complete.
