It is operated by the Antelope Valley Community College District, with a primary service area of 1,945 square miles covering portions of Los Angeles and Kern counties. is looking to re-establish that tradition with the Antelope Valley College Throws Festival. The festival takes place today at the college, beginning at 1 p.m. with the men's hammer competition followed by the men's discus at 3 p.m. and women's discus at 5 p.m. The field includes some of the top throwers in the world. ``It's kind of legendary,'' Antelope Valley College track coach Mark Covert said. Not so long ago, the High Desert was considered a Mecca for throwers. The strong spring winds - Covert calls them ``quartering winds'' - can add 15 feet or more to a throw.
