A mathematics instructor who also teaches a course for playwrights and is expanding into multimedia presentations, Trow received the highest award given to a faculty member Friday as part of Faculty Recognition Day.

Trow hopes to get extra free time to help faculty members with their computer video projects. She also hopes to have more time to spend with her students.

``When I look back at my best teacher, she was the best because she had time for me,'' Trow said. ``I need time to do the very best job I can to balance the play writing and math and help teachers create video.

``I have learned the most important part of teaching is to listen to what the student says.''

As scholar-in-residence, Trow will be required to make a public presentation during the 1998-99 school year. Trow plans to present a performance piece incorporating writing, poetry, theater and computer-edited video.

``I hope to do it in the theater in the college,'' she said.

Trow came to the college in fall 1971 as a math teacher. Her love of the theater led her to found the Cedar Street Theatre in 1978.

In mathematics, Trow has gained a reputation for helping students through ``math anxiety.'' With prescriptive pre·scrip·tive

Since 1990, Trow has been leading a course teaching students how to write and put plays together. Some of the plays will be presented in the college's Original One-Act Festival later this month.

``I have the ability to teach math and play writing and to be comfortable with both left-brain and right-brain fields of interest,'' Trow said. ``I also have a knack for taking a complex process and explaining it in simple terms.''

Trow is the 16th faculty member to receive this award, which recognizes a faculty member's outstanding commitment to helping students learn.

``Our scholars are teachers who tend to stand out in their field,'' says Standerfer.
