A.V. COLLEGE'S FIRST PRESIDENT DIES BARKER THERE WHILE CAMPUS BUILT.

LANCASTER -- Antelope Valley College's first president, Lowell F. Barker, has died at his Oregon home at age 94.

President from 1957 to 1963, Barker was in charge as the college moved out from under the umbrella of the Antelope Valley Union High School District The Antelope Valley Union High School District (A.V.U.H.S.D.) is located in the Antelope Valley area of California, in northern Los Angeles County.

The district includes eight public high schools, one trade school, and two continuation high schools in the cities of Palmdale
 to become an independent community college district and as it built its campus at 30th Street West and Avenue K.

Groundbreaking for the campus was held in September 1959, the new campus opened in 1961 and the college district was established in 1962.

In February 1963, Barker accepted a president's job at Merced College, where he remained until his retirement in 1977.

, Barker worked as an instructor and dean at Pasadena City College.

He was born in North Ogden, Utah North Ogden is a city in Weber County, Utah, United States. The population was 15,026 at the 2000 census, by July 2006 population was estimated at 16,798. North Ogden is on U-235, three miles north of Ogden, and is an outgrowth of that city.  on March 19, 1912. He received an associate degree from Weber College in 1932, a bachelor's degree from the University of Utah The University of Utah (also The U or the U of U or the UU), located in Salt Lake City, is the flagship public research university in the state of Utah, and one of 10 institutions that make up the Utah System of Higher Education.  in 1934, a master's from Columbia Teachers College in New York in 1938, and a doctorate in education from the University of Southern California The U.S. News & World Report ranked USC 27th among all universities in the United States in its 2008 ranking of "America's Best Colleges", also designating it as one of the "most selective universities" for admitting 8,634 of the almost 34,000 who applied for freshman admission .

He served as a Navy officer on a destroyer in the Pacific during World War II.

His first wife, Jeanet, died before him in 1995. In 2002, he married Helen Hixson.

His widow reported that he died Aug. 21 after a long illness as the result of a stroke. A memorial service was held Aug. 26 in Oregon.
