The alliance, composed of about 50 representatives of public agencies and private industry, wants to create 3,000 jobs over the next five years. Toward that goal, the group is hoping to raise $500,000 annually for a variety of marketing, job creation and retention efforts.

``We think it's terribly important to go ahead with a regional marketing effort,'' Councilman David Myers said.

The approval of the $10,000 came Wednesday night after Vern Lawson Jr., one of the organizers of the alliance, gave assurances that an independent party would serve as the clearinghouse for any leads generated by the group's campaign.
