A.V. ALL-STAR TEAM HAS TOUGH OPENER DISTRICT 51 SQUAD HELD TO ONE HIT.

PALMDALE - How does a softball softball, variant of baseball played with a larger ball on a smaller field. Invented (1888) in Chicago as an indoor game, it was at various times called indoor baseball, mush ball, playground ball, kitten ball, and, because it was also played by women, ladies'  lineup loaded with proven hitters manage just one harmless single and lose 1-0 against less-than-dominating pitching?

That's what the Antelope Valley This article is about the Los Angeles County region. For the census-designated place in Wyoming, see Antelope Valley-Crestview, Wyoming.

The 18-under girls couldn't do anything against Riverside Jurupa in Tuesday's Western Regionals loss at Massari Park.

``That's a struggle when you don't get any hits, and we just couldn't get any hits,'' said manager Lester Ball, whose team faced elimination in Wednesday's late losers'-bracket game against Stockton Oak Park.

Monique Saldana struck out, and Heather Nix popped to right to end the game.

The loss ruined an excellent performance by District 51 right-hander Amanda Wachsmuth. She went the distance, struck out six and gave up just one hit - Garcia's leadoff triple over right fielder right fielder

On the next pitch, Garcia scored on a wild pitch.

At the time, one run didn't seem like much, considering District 51's lineup features most of the region's top high school talent. But with a heavy wind blowing in, District 51 constantly foiled itself with popups and easy flyouts; 10 of its outs were on popouts, including five in the final three innings.

. One wild pitch was all it took, and we just couldn't get the bats going. It was hard for us to get hits up the gaps.''

District 51 had its best chance in the first inning. Sayoko Rutledge led off with walk and stole second and third base. Vanessa Gallegos followed with a strikeout and Pulcifer popped to center. Saldana then walked but was thrown out attempting to steal second for the third out.

District 51 followed with 16 consecutive outs until Pulcifer's single.
