The Antelope Valley
 Air Pollution Control District more autonomy and change its name has gained support from a key state Senate panel.

``This bill gives the Antelope Valley air district the local control it needs, the same kind of independence the Mojave Desert district has,'' Knight said.

Knight's Senate Bill 1459 was approved 4-2 Wednesday by the Senate Local Government Committee. It now goes to the Senate Appropriations Committee In the United States government, the Appropriations Committee can refer to either:
  • the United States House Committee on Appropriations
  • the United States Senate Committee on Appropriations
, which must approve it before the bill can go to the Senate floor.

The legislation would not affect the enforcement of air quality regulations or the composition of the district's board, but would give it more authority over its budget and personnel matters, a Knight aide said.

After years of bridling under the rules of the South Coast Air Quality Management District The South Coast Air Quality Management District (SCAQMD), formed in 1976, is the air pollution agency responsible mainly for regulating stationary sources of air pollution for most of Los Angeles, San Bernardino, Riverside County, and all of Orange county. , the Antelope Valley was able to break away and form its own district in 1997.
