A.V. A WINNER WITH TEAMWORK LITTLEROCK SLOWS MCCUTCHEON BUT ANTELOPES MOVE INTO FIRST A.V. 55, LITTLEROCK 41.

Byline: Chris Cocoles Staff Writer

LITTLEROCK - The declaration was made before tipoff by Littlerock Highgirls' basketball coach Tom Hegre:

Crystal McCutcheon was not going to beat the Lobos, who trapped and double-teamed the Antelope Valley This article is about the Los Angeles County region. For the census-designated place in Wyoming, see Antelope Valley-Crestview, Wyoming.

McCutcheon did manage 12 points, but her supporting cast came up big in the Antelopes' 55-41 Golden League win Thursday.

Antelope Valley (17-4, 6-2), which hasn't won a league title since 1988, moved into sole possession of first place as Quartz Hill lost 65-60 to Palmdale in overtime on Thursday.

Littlerock (16-8, 5-3) seemed in command with a 31-22 lead late in the third quarter. The Antelopes, despite being chewed out by coach April Davenport Davenport, city (1990 pop. 95,333), seat of Scott co., E central Iowa, on the Mississippi River; inc. 1836. That basket sparked what turned out to be a 33-10 run over the game's final 10 minutes.

Davenport's halftime scolding took a while to sink in. But an Antelopes' team fielded almost exclusively of underclassmen finally responded.

``She's like `Do you guys want to be third?' We've been winning all season,'' McCutcheon said. ``We're not used to losing all season and I love it because the team is so confident.''

Antelope Valley received a confidence boost from the return of freshman Juanita Newsome, who missed Tuesday's 72-64 loss to Quartz Hill with the flu.

Newsome scored 14 points and made three 3-pointers in the second half. Junior forward Jacquana Young led the way with 18.

``We did what we had to do. We listened to our coach,'' Newsome said.

The Lobos used trapping trapping, most broadly, the use of mechanical or deceptive devices to capture, kill, or injure animals. It may be applied to the practice of using birdlime to capture birds, lobster pots to trap lobsters, and seines to catch fish.  and gimmick defenses to contain McCutcheon, who scored 21 points in A.V.'s 62-41 win over Littlerock last month.

But Littlerock backed away in the fourth quarter, allowing McCutcheon more freedom.

``They (ran a triangle-and-two on) us. And my girls are going `How do we beat this, how do we beat this?' '' Antelopes coach April Davenport said.

``We drew up all the plays to stop it. We started the second half with seven turnovers... I sat them all down for a bit, chewed their butt BUTT. A measure of capacity, equal to one hundred and eight gallons. See Measure.  and I said `Get together.' ''

``We just ran out of steam,'' Hegre said. ``We probably should have stayed in our halfcourt trap. We got out of that. They threw a couple of passes and got it in the middle.''
