Occidental does have eight players back. Of course, the Tigers won four games last season.

The middle infield will be an Alemany High reunion, with Esmeralda Macias at shortstop and Sonja Maldonado at second base. First baseman Maryann May (Verdugo Hills) will provide some power.

Valley: The main void is pitching. Coach Kodee Murray had two pitchers during fall workouts, but both had other commitments and cannot play this spring. So DeDe Molina, last year's third baseman third baseman

Also back are all-conference first baseman Monica Dopson and outfielders Sandi Holm and Andi Boswell.

Canyons: The Cougars' one returning starter, shorstop/first baseman Jennifer Sprague, will divide her time in the early season between basketball and softball.

Coach Ray Whitten, whose team did not make the regional playoffs for the first time in four years last season, is trying to conceal his excitement about his late addition, freshman Stacy Creo. The 21-year-old has not pitched since her junior year at Canyon High, but Whitten has high hopes.

Whitten also got plenty of more-recent Canyon grads, including first baseman/shortstop/pitcher Kassi Lemasters, second baseman Shalyn Martinez and Sunshine Esparza, who will start at third base and possibly pitch.

Moorpark: The Raiders, who finished second in conference last season, return just two players. But coach De Dow said she has "a lot of depth this year."

Second baseman Brandy Heyl is back, as is Marie Zentil, who will move from catcher to shortstop this season. Freshman Alicia Ramos (Santa Paula) will catch.

Occidental: Coach Bailey Brown is upbeat about her eight returners, her upgraded facilities and her team's new uniforms.

Junior Jenny Cortez, who was the team's only pitcher last season, will be backed up this year by freshman Maria Medina.
