E[acute accent]Cash, cash equivalents and marketable securities totaled $21,672,000 as of June 30, 2006. E[acute accent]Clinical Update E[acute accent]During the second quarter of 2006, the Company initiated a Phase 3 clinical trial using APF530, its product candidate for the prevention of chemotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting Nausea and Vomiting Definition Nausea is the sensation of being about to vomit. Vomiting, or emesis, is the expelling of undigested food through the mouth. (CINV CINV Chemotherapy Induced Nausea and Vomiting ) in patients undergoing either moderately or highly emetogenic chemotherapy chemotherapy (kē'mōthĕr`əpē), treatment of disease with chemicals or drugs. One chemotherapeutic approach is the development of selectively toxic substances, i.e. . Clinical sites are currently being initiated and have started to enroll and treat patients, some for multiple cycles. The trial is being conducted in the U.S., and preliminary clinical results are expected to be released in the first quarter of 2007. The study's primary endpoint is to establish the efficacy of APF530 for the prevention of acute onset (first 24 hours) and delayed onset (4-5 days) CINV in patients receiving either moderately or highly emetogenic chemotherapy. No other 5HT(3) antagonist antagonist /an·tag·o·nist/ (an-tag´o-nist) 1. a substance that tends to nullify the action of another, as a drug that binds to a cell receptor without eliciting a biological response, blocking binding of substances that could is currently approved for the prevention of both acute and delayed CINV for both moderately and highly emetogenic chemotherapy. E[acute accent]Analysis of efficacy data from the open-label Phase 2 study for the two doses entering the Phase 3 trial indicated that the percentage of complete responders in the group receiving moderately emetogenic chemotherapy was 100% in the acute phase and 92% in the delayed phase. In the group receiving highly emetogenic chemotherapy, the percentage of complete responders was 86% in the acute phase and 85% in the delayed phase. "Complete response" was defined as no emetic emetic (əmĕt`ĭk), substance that produces vomiting. Direct, or gastric, emetics, which act directly on the stomach, include syrup of ipecac, sulfate of zinc or copper, alum, ammonium carbonate, mustard in water, or copious quantities of episodes and no use of rescue medication. E[acute accent]The Phase 3 trial will involve a total of approximately 1,350 patients with approximately half receiving moderately emetogenic chemotherapeutic agents This is a list of specific pharmacologic agents that are known to be of use in the treatment of cancer, otherwise known as chemotherapeutic agents. This list is organized by "type" of agent, though the subsections are not necessarily definitive and are subject to revision. in one group and approximately half receiving highly emetogenic chemotherapeutic agents in another group. In each group there will initially be three arms of approximately 225 patients each; two arms will be treated with APF530, high and low dose form, and a third arm will be treated with the currently approved dose of palonosetron (brand name ALOXI(R)). APF530 contains the 5HT(3) antagonist anti-nausea drug granisetron granisetron /gran·is·e·tron/ (gra-nis´e-tron) an antiemetic used in conjunction with cancer chemotherapy or radiotherapy, administered as the hydrochloride salt. formulated for·mu·late tr.v. for·mu·lat·ed, for·mu·lat·ing, for·mu·lates 1. a. E[acute accent]Market Assessment E[acute accent]A qualitative and quantitative market assessment conducted by an independent research company has confirmed the significance of the market potential for APF530 at its targeted profile. By achieving the clinical end points of the Phase 3 trial in the management of acute and especially delayed onset nausea and vomiting, which is the head-to-head trial against Aloxi, APF530 has the potential to have significant adoption rates in many oncology oncology /on·col·o·gy/ (ong-kol´ah-je) the sum of knowledge regarding tumors; the study of tumors. on·col·o·gy n. practices. Over 90% of the physicians reporting in the survey would use APF530 at least some of the time with highly emetogenic chemotherapy, and over 80% of physicians reporting would use it some of the time with moderately emetogenic chemotherapy. E[acute accent]Conference Call E[acute accent]Management will be hosting an investment-community conference call today beginning at 11:00 a.m. Eastern time (8:00 a.m. Pacific time) to discuss the financial results, to provide a business update and to answer questions.
