The stock of PMA Insurance Group, which remains a separately rated entity, was contributed to PMA Capital Insurance Company, resulting in a reinsurance operation supported by over $500 million of statutory surplus. Historically, PMA Reinsurance Corporation and PMA Insurance Group were sister affiliates under the ownership of PMA Capital Corporation. Offsetting these strengths are the group's above average underwriting leverage, weakened cash flow position relative to its peers and the recent reserve action taken by PMA Capital Insurance Company. These factors are largely driven by the company's elevated loss reserve position--due to its casualty focus-- and its commitment to strong reserving practices, as evidenced by the strengthening action in 2000. While the third quarter reserve action increases the overall uncertainty in reserves, A.M. Best has confidence in management's commitment to maintaining a strong balance sheet. A.M.
