Very good risk-adjusted capitalisation - St Paul International maintains a very good level of capitalisation, primarily as a result of capital injections from its parent. A.M. Poor underwriting performance - The company has experienced a sustained period of poor underwriting performance over the last five years, culminating in a combined ratio of 136.5% in 2001. Expectations:
- Near-term return to operating profitability, with a return on equity (ROE) of over 10% in 2002.

- Growth in shareholders' funds through the retention of earnings, maintaining a very good risk-adjusted capitalisation.
