A.I.R. Announces Adaptec RAIDport on Server Boards; RAID On Board Brings Cost Down -- Way Down.

SAN JOSE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sept. 20, 1996--Today Advanced Integration Research (A.I.R.) announced a new series of 200 MHz server boards with the newly introduced Adaptec RAIDport.

RAIDport leverages on-board UltraSCSI, bringing down hardware count and providing for the lowest cost ever for incorporating RAID. A.I.R.'s new offerings -- designed for high performance entry level servers -- include dual Pentium, Pentium Pro, and dual Pentium Pro based solutions with ISA (1) (Instruction Set Architecture) See instruction set.

Adaptec RAIDport

Adaptec, the industry leader in SCSI controllers, developed the RAIDport concept to leverage existing embedded UltraSCSI chips on today's leading servers. It consists of two parts -- an on-board RAIDport connector, and the Adaptec ARO-1130 PCI RAID card. The ARO-1130 communicates directly with the on-board UltraSCSI controller enabling RAID operations to be handled at the motherboard level. This radically simpler design represents the lowest-cost approach ever, allowing PC vendors to economically incorporate RAID into their entry-level server products. "RAIDport provides a RAID solution to a segment of the market that previously could not afford it," according to Roger Cox, Manager of Array Products for Adaptec's Mission Critical Systems.

A.I.R. Server Motherboards

A.I.R. is offering three high-performance server boards with built-in RAIDport -- the P6-NDP dual Pentium Pro (150-200 MHz) with EISA/PCI expansion, the P6-NPI single Pentium Pro (150-200 MHz) with ISA/PCI expansion, and the P5-TDP dual Pentium (75-200 MHz) with EISA/PCI expansion. The new system boards incorporate Intel's 82430/40 FX chip sets, that support Error Checking and Correction (ECC (1) (Error-Correcting Code) A type of memory that corrects errors on the fly. See ECC memory.

(2) (Elliptic Curve Cryptography) A public key cryptography method that provides fast decryption and digital signature processing.
), and two USB, two serial (16550) and one parallel (ECP/EPP) port(s). All of the new products have been extensively tested for compatibility with SCO UNIX v. 3.x, 5.0; Windows NT 3.51, 4.0; Windows 95; O/S/2 v. 2.0., 2.1, WARP, 3.0; NetWare v. 3.1x, 4.1x; Solaris X86 v. 2.4, 2.5; and UNIX UNIX
